Dr. Georgios E. Romanos

Georgios E. Romanosis Professor of the Department of Periodontology and Director of Laser Education at Stony Brook University (SBU), School of Dental Medicine, Stony Brook, New York. He is also Professor (Prof. Dr. med. dent.) of Oral Surgery and Implant Dentistry at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany.

Professor Romanos has been a recipient of many research awards, like the T.H. Maiman Award for Best Laser Research by the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD).

He is fully trained in Periodontology, Prosthodontics and Oral Surgery in Germany and in USA; Professor Romanos is Board Certified in Oral Surgery and Implant Dentistry in Germany, as well as Diplomate by the American Board of Periodontology. He has a dental license in Germany and in New York. He completed his training in Periodontology initially in Berlin (FU Berlin) and his Doctoral degree (magna cum laude) on connective tissue research. After his prosthodontic training in Freiburg and Oral Surgery in Frankfurt, he completed postdoctoral degree on Immediate Loading of dental implants with studies performed in Malaysia and Germany and he obtained the postdoctoral degree (“Habilitation”, Dr. habil.).

He has obtained various academic positions, like he was Associate Professor and later on full Professor (Prof. Dr. med. dent.) of Oral Surgery and Implant Dentistry at the Univ. of Frankfurt, Professor and Director of Laser Sciences at NYU, Professor of Clinical Dentistry at the Univ. of Rochester/NY and former Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at Stony Brook University. Professor Romanos served (2014–2015/2019-2020) as President of the Implantology Research Group of the IADR, President of the Academy of Osseointegration Foundation (2018-2019), Chair of Science and Research Committee of the Academy of Laser Dentistry (2016-2018) and Chairman of North American Division of the World Federation of Laser Dentistry (2010–2014).

He is a fellow of the ADEA Leadership Institute, Great of New York Academy of Prosthodontics (GNYAP), American Association for Dental Research (AADR), Academy of Osseointegration (AO), Intern. Academy for Dental Facial Esthetics, Pierre Fauchard Academy; American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, International Team for Implantology (ITI) Foundation, Int. College of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), the Int. College of Dentists (FICD) and the American College of Dentists (FACD).

He has authored more than 350 articles in peer-reviewed journals (Google Scholar h-Index: 65 and in the Web of Science: 31), over 15 chapters on periodontology, laser therapy, implantology and oral surgery. He is a well-known speaker with experience of more than 500 lectures in national and international meetings.

He has mentored approx. 100 students and junior faculty members. He is the author of 5 books published by Quintessence and Wiley and guest editor of Periodontology 2000 issue published in 2010 entitled “Risks and their Prevention in Implant Therapy”. He serves on the editorial board member of more than 30 dental journals, among others Int. Journal of Oral Science, Journal of Periodontology, Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, Photo-biomodulation, Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, Materials, International Journal of Oral Implantology, Quintessence International.

His research interests focus on wound healing, bone regeneration, immediate loading, connective tissue research, peri-implantitis therapy, laser-tissue interactions, photodynamic therapy, factors for improvement of implant stability, as well as management of complications in surgical dentistry.
